“Development which meets the needs of the present generation without jeopardising
the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
The term sustainable development is most widely cited from the 1987 report of the
World Commission on Environment and Development (the Bruntland Commission), entitled
“Our Common Future”.
“Development which meets the needs of the present generation without jeopardising
the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
There is a general consensus that the present way of living is not sustainable;
thus, we are living beyond our means and our current way of life is placing an increasing
burden on the planet. The stress we put on resources and our environmental systems
(water, air, land) simply cannot go on forever.
In the business world, to adhere to the traditional bottom line (i.e., the economic
bottom line) is simply not enough and organisations are increasingly thinking about
the “triple bottom line” (3BL) in an attempt to include environmental quality and
social justice with economic prosperity.
Although meeting the needs of each of these dimensions may seem to conflict with
each other in the short term, meeting the needs of the future depends on how we
balance each of them when making decisions today.
